UPDATE – Date change for Billyo O’Donnell Plein Art Workshop

For more than two decades I’ve been intrigued by the way a painting’s surface and subject complement and compete in the viewer’s mind. In working plein air, I am excited by the way my visual experience translates into a surface language expressed through the richness of paint. Using a personal language of abstract marks, I want to share with the viewer a deeper emotional response to the world in which we live.

This is a fantastic opportunity to learn oil painting techniques from highly acclaimed artist Billyo O’Donnell. Locally, you can see wonderful examples of his work in Mike Carroll’s gallery. This  in-depth workshop on painting from life on location is for the advanced to the beginner. The goal is to give each student a solid understanding of the visual experience through the painting process while engaging the most basic to the most advanced concepts. Billyo will demonstrate and lecture to the group and personalize his instruction for the individual. Billyo’s easy going personality and dedication to teaching has been appreciated by many.

Workshop will be held Friday,  December 27  from 9am-4pm.

Cost is only $125 for this one day events. Materials are not included.  Limited to 12 participants.

Participants will meet at the art center on the morning of the first day and then we will be painting from select locations across the beautiful island of Lana’i, Hawaii.

The instructor  will have a car and may have room for 2-3 students and the equipment. It is highly  encouraged that students carpool to locations.

Materials are not included; a recommended  materials list is available. Please provide adequate time to attain your supplies.

Registration for this workshop is now open. Please don’t delay! You can sign up at the Art Center or online here.

For more information about Billyo and his art, you can visit his website here.

Kathleen Alexander Watercolor Workshop

“Small Projects in Watercolor – Flowers and Shells”

My paintings are usually about capturing a quiet moment in nature or in life. At the same time, I love to use strong, dynamic colors, and accentuate the contrast between light and shadow in my paintings to create depth and realism. My work is inspired by the natural beauty of the Hawaiian Islands, and I attempt to share that inspiration with those who view my work.  – Kathleen Alexander

Join Maui watercolor artist, Kathleen Alexander, for a two day workshop focusing on small projects. Rather than one larger painting, we will work on several small projects such as shells and tropical flowers. Layering and glazing techniques will be covered, as well as masking and drybrush. The workshop will be taught step by step, with lots of individual attention.

This two day workshop will be held Saturday and Sunday, January 11-12, 2020 from 9 AM-4 PM each day. A break for lunch, coffee and snacks will be provided.

Workshop will be held at the LHES High School Art Classroom T104.

The two day watercolor workshop is open to all (over 16 years of age), beginners are welcome. This event is limited to 12 participants.

Cost of the two-day workshop is $220 for general public / $180 for LAC members. Materials may be purchased from Kathleen at a cost of $40 (paint, paper, use of brushes, etc.) A list of materials is available for those who prefer to provide their own art supplies.

Please come by the Art Center for more information and to register, or you can easily sign up for this workshop by going here.

Kathleen’s past workshops have been inspirational and lots of fun for past participants. Kathleen Alexander moved to Maui in 2010 from the San Francisco Bay Area. She has been painting in watercolor for over thirty years. Kathleen earned her bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, but a short time later, decided to pursue a career in art. She was awarded a one-year scholarship to the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and attended the AAU in 2000-2001. Kathleen began her art career by participating in fine art festivals in California, and teaches beginning through advanced watercolor painting workshops as well as private lessons.

Her artwork has been accepted into national and international watercolor exhibitions around the globe. She has won many awards for her paintings, and received signature membership in both Northwest Watercolor Society and Watercolor West in 2009. She was a featured artist in April 2010 and June 2014 issues of Watercolor Artist magazine, and is included in Splash 12, Splash 14, Splash 15, Splash 16, Splash 18, Splash 19, and Splash 20 (to be published in 2019) by North Light Books.

Kathleen’s paintings were accepted into the “Art Maui” exhibitions in 2011 and 2012, and recently in the Hawaii National Parks 2016 Centennial Juried Exhibition at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, Hawaii.

Kathleen is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society (NWS), Watercolor West (WW), the Northwest Watercolor Society (NWWS), and a member of North American Watercolor Artists.
